A raw egg is rubbed over the body and then cracked into a glass of water to 'read' what the white draws. In Mexican and Central American curanderismo it's used mainly to tell whether a baby has 'mal de ojo': the belief that a look of envy or admiration can make them ill.

A cleanse handed down in the family

Almost nobody learns it in a class, but by watching a grandmother or a neighbor. That's why it changes from house to house — some pray an Our Father, others add rue — and there is no single, correct version.

Why the egg was chosen

It was cheap, sat in every kitchen, and its white makes striking shapes in water. Belief says it 'absorbs' what's bad, like alum or lemon: a magnet passed over the body to gather up what shouldn't be there.

How to do the egg cleansing test step by step

The procedure varies, but the skeleton is nearly always the same. These are the most frequent steps, without the prayers or the herbs, which are optional and regional.

  1. Pick a fresh egg at room temperature

    A same-day egg is preferred, not one straight from the fridge. A cold, old egg gives a watery white that 'reads' worse: the detail isn't magic, it changes what you'll see.

  2. Pass the egg over the body from top to bottom

    Head, nape, chest, back, arms and legs are covered, lingering where the person feels unwell. On babies it's done gently, without pressing the fontanelle or the eyes.

  3. Prepare a clear glass of water

    Smooth and unpatterned, filled a little past halfway. Room temperature is common; some prefer it lukewarm because it makes more of the white rise.

  4. Crack the egg and drop in only the contents

    It's tapped on the rim and the white and yolk are poured in without breaking the yolk. The shell is discarded; what's read is what floats and hangs suspended in the water.

  5. Let the glass sit for a minute or two

    Left undisturbed, the white organizes itself: part sinks, part rises, threads and bubbles appear. Stirring ruins the reading because it undoes the shapes just forming.

  6. Leave it where you can watch it calmly

How to read the white, step by step

Reading the egg is, above all, looking closely. There's no rush: the shapes appear and settle over time. This is how to observe before you interpret.

  1. Hold the glass up to the light

    In front of a window or a lamp, the backlight makes the fine threads visible that go unnoticed head-on. It's the step that most changes what you think you see.

  2. Look from below as well

    Many shapes, especially the 'eye,' show up better viewing the bottom from underneath or the side. The white isn't flat: it fills all three dimensions of the water.

  3. Separate what rose from what stayed at the bottom

    In the traditional reading, what rises 'comes out' of the body and the heavy mass at the bottom is the yolk. Telling the two apart by eye comes before naming any figure.

  4. Name the shapes without forcing them

    Only at the end are they named: an eye, a face, needles. It helps to accept that often there is no clear figure, just scattered white.

The threads or 'needles' that rise

Filaments of white that climb like threads or spikes toward the surface. They're read as the harm 'coming out' of the body; the more of them and the taller, the heavier the load is judged to be.

Bubbles and foam

Points of air stuck to the white or a layer of foam on top. They're usually read as fright, nerves or 'mal aire.' It's also what appears most easily, even with nothing wrong.

Peaks, hills and silhouettes

Little mounds of white or forms that look like people or animals. Here the reading turns very free: the silhouette is tied to whoever supposedly cast the eye. It's the part most open to imagination.

Why those shapes form: the physics of egg white

None of this needs anything supernatural. An egg white in water behaves in a predictable way, and that behavior produces exactly the threads, eyes and bubbles that tradition reads.

The white is water with coiled proteins

Egg white is nearly 90% water and about 10% protein, mostly ovalbumin and ovomucin. In the glass those folded chains stretch and tangle together, forming visible filaments.

Why it doesn't dissolve at once

The white is slightly denser than water, so it hangs suspended like a cloud instead of spreading out. The proteins hold it together in clumps and trails.

Ovomucin builds the threads

The thick white is rich in ovomucin, an elongated protein that forms a gel-like mesh. That mesh stretches into filaments: threads of protein, not something that 'came out' of anyone.

Why the threads rise

The white 'rising,' the detail that impresses people most, has two simple causes acting together. Neither requires a harm to expel.

Air bubbles pulling upward

Cracking and pouring traps bubbles, and a fresh egg releases carbon dioxide. Lighter than water, they drag the filaments stuck to them toward the surface.

Currents from a temperature difference

If the water is warmer than the white, convection currents form: warm rises, cold sinks. Those currents carry the threads upward and stretch them into peaks.

Where the 'eye' comes from

It's usually a bubble or dome of white with a transparent center that, to the eye, makes a circle with a dot. Sometimes the 'pupil' is the chalaza, the little cord that held the yolk. A structure every egg carries, not a mark left by a stare.

Pareidolia: the brain that hunts for faces

It's the tendency to recognize familiar faces and figures in random stimuli: the face on the Moon, the eye in the white. The brain is finely tuned to detect faces and finds them where there are none. A normal phenomenon.

Why the person feels better afterward
